NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND
August 13 – 15
$250 per person, dbbl. occ.
Can’t afford to fly to the islands to dive this summer? Come and beach dive this Island with Ocean Explorers.
Trip includes 2 nights hotel and 2 days of unlimited shore diving. Perfect for new divers as well as those looking do dive someplace new. The bottom is covered with anemones, and lobster, crab and tautog are quite common. You will also see skates, eels and sea bass. A night dive will have lobster crawling all over the place. (But don’t take. Permits are required and not given to out of state residents.)
But, by all means, bring your cameras.
Because these are beach dives, each buddy team will need to fly a dive flag on a float.
We’ll visit the historic town of Newport with its quaint shops, restaurants, piers and harbors.
You can also take a tour of the famous “cottages” of the wealthy gilded age families. Along Belleview Avenue overlooking the ocean are mansions like the Breakers, summer home of the Vanderbilts.

If anyone finds a Sea & Sea DX2000 digital camera floating in the ocean somewhere, I was young and needed the money.

We're very interested. Are tanks and air included?

Xev,
No, no equipment is included. Since we're doing this on our own, everyone is bringing everything they need. You can rent tanks from us and we plan on working out the details for refilling them.

Since I haven't been up to Newport to dive in quite a few years, I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weekend and see if the place had changed much. Well, it hasn't. It's still the quaint little preppy town it was 20 years ago.
I could have made the rather boring 4 hour run up 95 but I decided to kill 2 birds. Since my son and his family live out on long island we picked them up and took the ferry across the sound to New Haven. A little longer trip but much more scenic. And I got to spend some time with little Evan James. We visited the sites we plan to dive on our August trip. As luck would have it we met an instructor who works with my daughter-in-law. He was giving the breifing for an AOW class. We sat in and got the skinny on the best sites in the area.
We took a bunch a pics and posted them here in the gallery section.

Please forgive an old grandfather for the shots of his pride and joy. The little bugger is just so cute!
If your looking for an inexpensive weekend with some interesting diving join us in August. Underwater you'll find; skates, tautog, horseshoe crabs and schools of fish. This time of year there should even be tropicals hiding in the rocks. If you do the night dive I guarantee you'll see lobster crawling around on the sand.
You'll have to fight the urge to grab a few. You need a permit and they don't give them to out of state residents.
On our way back we stopped and the Mystic Aquarium and historic Mystic Seaport. Cool way to top off the weekend. Sorry, couldn't find Mystic Pizza.
